First Lady of Texas to Visit Temple

Discover Downtown is honored to host the First Lady of Texas, Cecilia Abbott, in a dedication ceremony to celebrate Temple’s admittance as a Texas Main Street community on Tuesday, May 1st at 10:30 am on the City Hall grounds at 2 N. Main Street.  A reception will follow.  The public is invited to attend both the dedication and the reception.

The Texas Main Street Program (TMSP) is a part of the Texas Historical Commission (THC), the state agency for historic preservation. The TMSP began in 1981 as one of the first coordinating programs in the country to designate and provide services to local communities committed to undertaking a preservation-based downtown revitalization effort. Texas communities apply for designation, commit to funding a local program and agree to carry out the national Main Street Four Point Approach, with technical assistance provided by the state Main Street office. Temple’s application was accepted in 2017, and became officially designated January 1, 2018. Currently, there are 89 designated Main Street communities in Texas, which includes 16 urban programs in population ranges above 50,000, like Temple. The program is centered around achieving economic impact through the revitalization of the historic downtown over time through an effort that includes staff, volunteer and stakeholder participation.

The annual First Lady’s Main Street Tour has been a tradition for the THC and the TMSP since the state program was founding in 1981, and each First Lady since that time has participated. The event is also an opportunity for the THC to present a design rendering prepared by the TMSP design staff that shows the future potential for the effort. The event also includes remarks by the Chairman of the Texas Historical Commission, John Nau III. The First Lady’s visit is annually sponsored by the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT).
