The closure began on February 1st, and this portion of Ave U is still expected to be closed until approximately mid-June. There is access to property owners along this section of Avenue U however no on-street parking is allowed.

Nicole Torralva, P.E., the City’s Public Works director, says that this project is an important component of the City’s Transportation Capital Improvement Plan (TCIP). “The reconstruction, enhancements, and new connections of this roadway will tie in connectivity with Baylor Scott & White and the V.A. Hospital facilities while adding TMED Zone beautification and amenities. The Reinvestment Zone #1 has also played an integral role in making this project and others possible in the redevelopment of this TMED area.” Enhanced intersections, turn movements and multi-modal components such as sidewalks and hike-and-bike trails have been incorporated into the design.
